Cucumber Salad Recipe (Mizeria)

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version

Fresh and tangy, this simple Polish salad recipe of freshly sliced cucumbers and sour cream is a perfect Polish recipe year round. If you like healthy cooking, you can substitute the sour cream for Greek yogurt, but you will be surprised how the sour cream blends nicely with the lemon juice, making it into a delicate milk sauce.   Legend says that Polish cucumber salad was a favorite dish of Queen Bona Sforza, an Italian princess who married the Polish king Sigismund I in the 16th century.  Unfortunatly, the Polish dish made her homesick and cry, hence the Polish name "Mizeria" which is derived from Latin for "misery."  But, I promise, the taste is anything but miserable!
